This Page needs to be update to the new Red Cross standards 2009.  What is here now is a general guideline for the skills your swimmer may have now or will gain.

Youth Swim Classes

Ø (level 1): Nine, 30 minute lessons

This class is designed for the beginning swimmer who has no or limited water exposure. Platforms allow the swimmers to touch and gain confidence and comfort in the water while they learn basic aquatic skills. Students will learn the following skills:

·        Enter and exit water safely

·        Submerge mouth, nose and eyes

·        Exhale underwater through mouth and nose

·        Open eyes underwater, pick up submerged object

·        Change direction while walking or paddling

·        Roll over from front to back and back to front with support

·        Explore floating on front and back with support

·        Explore swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions with support.

Ø  (level 2): Nine, 45 minute lessons

 This class is for students who are not afraid in the water and will come out to an instructor and go under the water without fear.  This level will work on the following skills:  

  • Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side

  • Exit water safely using ladder or side

  • Submerge entire head

  • Blow bubbles submerging head in a rhythmic pattern (bobbing)

  • Open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object in shallow water

  • Float on front and back

  • Perform front and back glide

  • Change direction of travel paddling on front or back

  • Roll over from front to back, back to front

  • Tread water using arm and leg motions (chest-deep water)

  • Swim on front, back, and side using combined arm and leg actions

Ø  (level 3) Nine, 45 minute lessons

This class builds on the skills from the Oama class through additional guided practice.  Swimmers will improve their techniques and work on the following skills:

  • Submerge and retrieve an object in chest deep water

  • Bob with the head fully submerged

  • Rotary breathing in horizontal position

  • Perform front and back glide using two different kicks

  • Float on front and back in deep water

  • Change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back

  • Tread water using hand and leg movements

  • Perform front and back crawl

  • Butterfly—kick and body motion

  • Perform the HELP and Huddle position

Ø  (level 4): Nine, 45 minute lessons

 

 

 

 

This class continues to build technique in the skills learned previously and introduces the swimmer to the following new skills:

  • Swim underwater

  • Perform open turns on front and back

  • Tread water using sculling arm motions and different kicks

  • Perform the following:

    • Front and back crawl

    • Breaststroke

    • Butterfly

    • Elementary backstroke

  • Swim on side using scissors-like kick

Ø  (level 5): Nine, 45 minute lessons

This level provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.

·        Front flip turn

·        Backstroke flip turn

·        Front and back crawl

·        Butterfly

·        Breaststroke

·        Elementary backstroke

·        Sidestroke

·        Tread water with two different kicks

·        Learn survival swimming

Ø  (level 6): Nine, 45 minute lessons

This level refines swimmer’s strokes helping them to swim with ease, efficiency, and power over greater distances. Students will also learn:

  • Endurance Skills

  • Turns

  • Demonstrate various training techniques

  • Calculate target heart rate

  • Apply principles of water exercise

  • Demonstrate etiquette in fitness swimming

  • Use a pace clock

  • Use a pull buoy while swimming

  • Use fins while swimming

  • Use paddles while swimming

  • Describe the principles of setting up a fitness program
